Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is an ancient system of health and wellness that has been practiced for over than 3,500 years before Western Medicine came into existence in 1847, with the establishment of the American Medical Association. It is an alternative medical practice inspired by the traditional medicine in China and it is not related to Oriental medicine, which is actually a practice that was developed not only in the Orient, but worldwide.
What is the Philosophy of TCM?
The Philosophy of TCM is based on the vital energy of “Qi”, a force of life that surges through the body, performing multiple functions to maintain health. It is also based on the Daoist belief that the human body in a small-scale version of the universe where everything is interconnected. TCM practitioners are clinicians who believe that chronic pain is caused by “Qi” blockage or imbalance and that to heal the body they need to fix or balance its flow.
What are the Primary methods used in TCM?
There are 6 primary methods used in TCM to identify and treat human disorders and restore optimal functions of the body including acupuncture, which is practiced more often, tui na massage, moxibustion, cupping/scrapping, TCM nutrition and Chinese herbs.
Acupuncture is a very old and popular complimentary medical treatment considered as part of TCM. With acupuncture it’s been proven that the physiologic functioning of the body is affected when stimulating specific areas (acupuncture points) by inserting and manipulating needles into the skin, tissue, and muscles of the body, healing the body, and maintaining health.
